The SCU will hold urban community social rides every Thursday until end of September, starting May 4, 2017. Rides will be offered in a variety of locations across Greater Sudbury and will vary in difficulty and length to allow a wide variety of riders to meet other cyclists. If the weather holds up, we may go even longer into the fall!

Rides will vary in length and difficulty. We want to connect other cyclists. And we also want to encourage more people to bike - most of these rides will be perfect for those people who’d like to bike more but are nervous doing so in Greater Sudbury - this is an opportunity to cycle in a group, make cycling friends, and gain confidence to bike on your own.

Check our website event calendar as well as our Facebook group for ride details, which will be posted every Monday. We’ll have something for everyone, including straightforward social bike rides, themed rides (you get to visit some neat places), longer rides for the keeners, and other specialty rides like safety awareness rides. We will announce any cancellations due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances on our website, Facebook group, and twitter the day of the ride.

Children are welcome on our rides, but it is the responsibility of the parent(s) to judge whether their child will be able to handle the ride. Some children can ride quickly and a long ways; others cannot.

We will always ride in one group and will ensure that the group stays together - we will never leave anyone behind!

We’ll give you the following info for each ride:

What: type of ride eg social, themed, other
Where: route details
When: time the ride starts, usually 6 pm on Thursdays; we’ll also have some longer rides every now and then on weekends
Ride duration: estimated time it takes to do the ride at a moderate pace
Ride length: number of kms round trip
Ride difficulty: easy, moderate, or hard; we will identify hills
Ride surface: we’ll note whether the ride includes paved roads or paved trails, hard pack trails, or rough trails
Ride comfort: we’ll identify the level of safety and comfort eg bike lanes, separated cycle tracks, paved shoulders, off-road trails, quiet residential streets, heavy traffic roads, highways
Recommended equipment: water, snacks and helmets are always recommended, but we may recommend other equipment from time to time

Every ride will include a pre-ride safety talk and some tips on how to navigate the route we’ll take. Riders will need to sign an attendance/waiver form. Everyone under 18 must wear a helmet.

Before each ride, please check your bike out to make sure it’s road-worthy! We’ll have a bicycle pump available prior to each ride, but we won’t be doing bike repairs or adjustments.
